I loved Helen. I loved spending time with her just talking about life, theater, politics,and the world. One thing was certain, it was never a pessimistic view that she shared - regardless of the topic. I occasionally accompanied her to "Curtain Street Parties" and we had a great deal of fun. I particularly enjoyed when she knew she had a wedding or special party to attend. Her home was full of such fantastic things...she would walk around, find something beautiful and say, "I think I'll give them THIS!" Not only was this a completely new take on the concept of giving (for me), but I sincerely hope the recipients realized she was truly thinking of THEM when she selected the item. I know she was a true friend becuase, even after I moved away to Texas, there would be long stretches of time when we would not communicate. If I was in the area, I would give her a call (I continue to have her phone number memorized) and we would meet up and laugh and talk as if we had just seen each other a week ago. An elegant lady with a beautiful life who loved her children.

I enjoyed meeting Helen through Alison's depiction of her--a strong, committed, patient, engaged woman and mother. Alison, thank you for your intricate analysis and depiction of what it means to grow up. Those of us who have struggled as you have appreciate the clarity you've given to this complex process. I had the pleasure of having Mrs. Bechdel for English in the early 80's and I always looked forward to her class. I would do minor pranks in her class and she never let on she knew it was me until I ran into her several years after graduation in town (Bellefonte) and she mentioned that she knew. She was a wonderful teacher and one of the few I really do remember!

Since moving to Bellefonte in 2000, I have treasured conversations with Helen, especially grateful for her compassion and intense concern when I was going through divorce. One wintery day, we stopped to chat on Allegheny Street. "Where are you going on such a cold day, Helen?" "To Confers, to pick up some diamond studs I had on lay-away!" Helen shone with the strength and brilliance of a diamond in her life. May light perpetual shine upon her. And heartfelt condolences to the family in this loss.

I only knew of Helen Bechdel through Alison's work. Even at that remove, it was obvious she was a creative woman of great intelligence and intense commitment. My sincerest condolences to Dr. Fenichel, the Misches, and all the Bechdels.

My condolences to Helen's entire family. I first met Helen in the late 1980's through True and Rob Fisher, Rob Gannon, and Melady Kehm at a BHCA meeting. Her humorand her passion for education and the arts always shown bright. Her love for the Arts and Crafts movement also shined in her home. She will be sorely missed. It was great knowing her.

I was moved by the obituary to write. Helen clearly had an inspiring passion for living. It is sad when someone we love dies, especially sad when that someone embraced so much of life, never stopped wanting to be a part of the living and the learning and the beauty that life offers. Helen seemed to understand that in play we can sometimes find truth. It was her tireless focus that impressed me. Everything she did she gave her all. What a woman! I didn't know her except through the obit and Alison's book. But I wish I had. Thank you for sharing her extraordinary ordinary life.
